A functional capacity evaluation (fce) is a comprehensive standardised assessment which is administered to evaluate the extent to which a client’s physical, psychosocial or cognitive symptoms may be affected by his/her injury or illness. As part of the assessment process, the client’s specific work requirements are determined in order to offer advice and recommendations concerning workplace adjustments (if applicable), so that the client can continue working.
Functional Capacity Evaluations
If deemed necessary, a workplace assessment will also be undertaken to identify the specific physical,psychosocial and cognitive requirements. In some instances, a client may not be able to resume working. In such cases, the findings of the evaluation are used to offer advice regarding alternative work that the person may be able to perform. In addition, recommendations are also provided regarding treatment or rehabilitation that may be helpful to facilitate return to work.
These type of assessments are commonly requested by employers, occupational health providers and/or insurance companies as part of the disability management process. The purpose of the referrals are usually to address one or all of the following questions:
- Can the client perform his/her job role with or without accommodations?
- If yes, what accomodations can be implemented to assist or facilitate return to work?
- If the client cannot perform his/her job role, can an alternative job role be performed with or without accommodations?
- Is there any treatment or rehabilitation which may benefit the client? If so, please specify?
